History of Litchfield Park, Arizona
Litchfield Park was once land that that the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company had purchased in 1916. The company was having trouble importing long-staple cotton, which was used in making tire cords, uniforms and airplane fabric, due to the German blockade during World War I. The Vice President of Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company at that time, Paul Litchfield, was credited for using the land to grow cotton domestically.
A few years later, Goodyear Farms decided to locate their headquarters in Litchfield Park. There became an imminent need to house visiting executives and soon thereafter the Wigwam Resort was constructed in 1918. It wasn’t until 1929 that the resort opened to the public. It is consistently rated as one of the best resorts in Arizona to this day.
The Goodyear Company used Litchfield Park as a test site for auto, truck and tractor tires from 1931 to 1944. Then in 1987 the town was incorporated with a master planned community, public library, swimming pools and several municipal parks.
